Abstract

Diplomatic treaty between the Byzantine Empire and the Pisan commune, confirming and extending privileges previously granted to the Pisans, including commercial rights, legal protections, and financial provisions. The document also records the texts of earlier agreements of the same nature concluded between Pisa and previous emperors. The original Greek text and the official Latin translation, both issued and validated by the imperial chancellery of Constantinople, are preserved as separate documents.

No traces of ownership. However, annotations contemporary to the drafting of the documents are visible on the verso of both rolls, with marks of registration and validation by various imperial offices (sekreta) and their respective officials. Greek document: registered in the financial offices tou genikou and of the megas sakellarios by Theodore Promoundenos; validated by the logothetes tou dromou Demetrios Tornikes. Latin document: validated by the logothetes tou dromou Demetrios Tornikes.

(Physical description) Two massive rolls of Oriental bombycine paper. Greek document: nine sheets glued together (on the back) and written along the shorter side of each sheet; Latin document: 10 sheets glued together (on the back) and written along the shorter side of each sheet.
(Dimensions (cm, height x width, thickness)): Greek document: total length of the roll 569 cm; average length of the sheets 65 cm (with a minimum of 46 and a maximum of 69); width of the sheets ca. 28 cm; interlinear space 1.5 cm; left and right margin 2 cm. Latin document: total length of the roll 695 cm; length of the sheets 71 to 72 cm (except for the last one, about 66 cm); width of the sheets ca. 27 cm; interlinear space ca. 2.5/3.0 cm; left margin 1.8 to 2.5 cm, right margin 1.0 to 1.5 cm.
